Annie Kennedy handled assistant engineer duties, and Carla Azar and Catherine Hiltz appeared on drums and bass, respectively. Alex Hope (Troye Sivan) provided production and Rachael Findlen served as engineer, while Beatriz Artola mixed and Emily Lazar mastered the recordings. The two-piece hit the studio to work on the album this past April, and they did so with - for the first time - a team of all women. It was somehow exactly what I needed to hear.” The music felt very much like Tegan and Sara - it’s not like we discovered our childhood prog rock band or something - but there were still idiosyncratic quirks, like how often we sang together or things like that. It came flooding back, and that made me so excited to work on it. I ignored it, and it felt like I had ignored this whole story of myself. All that work, all that art, I had decided it was crap. I cried because I felt overwhelming pride and grief at how dismissive of that version of me I had been. The thing is, I didn’t cry because I was sad. Released in conjunction with their new memoir High School, I’m Just Like You is a perfect addition to Tegan & Sara’s illustrious discography.“Honestly, it was like I could physically remember what it felt like to be 17 and writing songs and the anticipation and terror of leaving high school. They’re able to release an album of 20-year-old songs and make it seem fresh and modern. These sisters are really showing just how consistently great a band can be. On the slow rock/pop anthem “I Don’t Owe You Anything,” Tegan & Sara deliver some classic lesbian pop feelings, singing “Baby I don’t ask much/all I want is your touch.” These lyrics will be feeding baby gays (and their Instagram captions) for years to come. Its yearning chorus of “hello, hello, hello, I’m right here” is sure to place it on countless Spotify playlists lesbians send to their unrequited crushes. “Hello, I’m Right Here,” is a beautiful ballad with classic Tegan & Sara harmonies that underscore why we all fell in love with the band in the first place. “Don’t Believe” serves as a prime example of the project’s strength, which allows the pair to remind fans of their stellar songwriting and pop soundscape creation. Songs like “Don’t Believe The Things They Tell You (They Lie)” soar on the project thanks to their tight, poppy production. Annie Kennedy worked as assistant engineer, Carla Azar was on drums and Catherine Hiltz played bass on the album. Tegan & Sara worked with an all-woman team, including producer Alex Hope, engineer Rachael Findlen, and mixer Beatriz Artola and masterer Emily Lazar. They’ve got some Robyn and Sia influence, but also plenty of the Tracy Chapman-style songwriting we love from the band. This album is a nice synthesis of the duo’s earlier acoustic, singer/songwriter work and their more recent pop direction. “With only minor tweaks to lyrics and structure, we tried to remain true to the original essence of each song,” Sara Quin added. “They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17,” she said, “We immediately recognized the songs as an essential part of our high school story.” Tegan Quin told Pitchfork in a press release that they found actual cassette tapes with old recordings of songs. The duo’s first album since Love You to Death in 2016, I’m Just Like You is composed of re-recorded songs from demos the pair made as teens. The full-length comes with enough songs to dance to, to think about your crush to, to look out your window, and to watch the rain to. Tegan & Sara, everyone’s favorite Canadian twins, gave lesbians a gift on Friday with a new album I’m Just Like You. ![]()
